2021 movie "Land" starring Robin Wright

Main Post:

Had zero foreknowledge of this movie but decided to watch it last night. For a short (1.5 hrs) indie, lower budget movie, Land was a great watching experience and did a lot right (below).

POTENTIAL SPOILERS

1/ A deep sense of gratification when the protagonist ultimately reveals her reason for living off the grid. All too often, especially in indie movies, directors seem to take great delight omitting back stories in order to leave motives open to interpretation. It always feels contrived and unfulfilling imo. This was done perfectly. The context, the timing, the delivery was spot on. Loved it.

2/ Not becoming a clunky love story. The two main characters interacting in deep isolation with similar tragic histories interact and operate on a level of respect and friendship driven by mutual trust and interdependence. This is strangely uncommon in movies. A single man and woman around the same age just remaining friends but caring deeply for one another. This alone was worth the watch imo.

3/ Robin Wright's acting chops. She's been at this forever but rarely (if ever?) as a lead. For being in front of the camera for the entire movie largely alone she absolutely killed it. Tons of respect for what she accomplished here.

Top Comment: Agreed. It was a movie I’d definitely recommend. It dealt with grief, loss, and recovery in a very realistic way. Robin Wright and Demian Bichir did an amazing job portraying a genuine friendship.

Movie Suggestion: Mio and the Land of Faraway

Main Post:

This is a fantasy flick from the 1980s that had the following:

Christian Bale (in his first movie ever) Christopher Lee Timothy Bottoms (pre-That’s My Bush) Susanna York

A Swedish-produced flick from a story written by the creator of Pippi Longstocking.

This clip alone should grab Jason’s interest: https://youtu.be/LwtrfTwE1V0

Thoughts? Anyone besides me ever see this one?

TIL 13 minutes were cut out of the movie The Land Before Time because it was considered too “frightening” for kids. The uncut version has never been released.

Movies about land use?

Main Post:

I am interested in becoming a county land use planner and for a little fun during my down time, I am wondering what movies there are then concerns discussion, the use of litigation over different kinds of land and property. The film that first comes to mind is Chinatown and how it slowly becomes a big theme in the plot. Minari also recently went into man's relationship with land use but to a lesser extent. Any movie dealing with property rights, appraising, development, farm land, and any other boring shit like that might be a little more interesting to me if I watch a movie about it.

Top Comment: There Will Be Blood (2007), The River (1984).
